House Sales Scheme – NIFHA and DfC briefing on Consultation

Currently House Sales Schemes, which are Northern Ireland’s equivalent to the ‘Right to Buy’ Scheme in Great Britain, are available to all Northern Ireland Housing Executive tenants and housing association tenants. Approximately 119,000 Housing Executive and 3,000 housing association properties have been sold to tenants over the past four decades.
The Consultation on options for the future of the House Sales Schemes for all tenants in Northern Ireland is part of the Department’s work to reverse the decision by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) to reclassify Housing Associations as public bodies. If the decision is not reversed, funding for new social homes could be reduced and waiting lists could grow.
As part of the Consultation, a number of public events will be held at venues across Northern Ireland. READ MORE.
In addition, Shane Clements of the DfC’s ONS team will present a free briefing to NIFHA members, followed by a Q&A, at 10am on Wednesday, 5th September. This is a valuable opportunity to learn more about the options and make your views known. The comments, questions and issues raised at this briefing will also help to inform NIFHA’s formal written response to the Consultation.
Places are limited and booking is essential, so be sure to reserve your place now.
